What is meant by "high thermal mass"?

Answer

Thermal sensors respond to temperature changes, not flow.  We try to improve correlation with flow by making the sensors of thick metal wires.  This way it takes the temperature swing not only of respiration air temperatures (which are constants) but also on air speed and volume, which are much more correlated with flow.
